Board of Directors

Chairman - HCol Patrick S. Curtis BA, CIM, FCSI

In 2012, Patrick founded Toronto Search and Rescue - Marine (T-SAR). He is an Investment Advisor and Portfolio Manager at CIBC Wood Gundy. He is currently Honorary Colonel of RCAF 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, a Director and Vice-President of the NATO Association of Canada and a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute. He is also a member of the Royal Commonwealth Society of Canada.

Corporate Secretary - Dr. Paul Nash Ph.D.

Dr. Paul Nash is a professional writer and editor. He is Toronto-based Correspondent for Diplomatic Courier magazine and a frequent China commentator. He is a member of the National Press Club of Washington, D.C., serving on the Newsmakers Committee. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He is a Senior Investment Writer/ Manager Investment Communications for a large global investment firm, He also teaches international relations for a U.K university.

Treasurer - Sylvie Lavoie, BBA, CGA (Retired)

Sylvie Lavoie has been a member of the Certified General Accountants of Ontario since 1992. She completed her Bachelor in Business Administration from York University in 1976 after completing her studies in the Bahamas and Boca Raton, Florida. Her experience in accounting, internal audit, and with accounting systems and operations includes Canadian General Electric, Ultramar Canada, and Tupperware Canada. Since 1989 she is a consultant and as such, she helps small and medium enterprises to choose software, implement it, and train personnel to manage their own financial affairs.  Sylvie has taught at Seneca College part time and was treasurer of the Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club for two years. Sylvie was treasurer of Les Centres D'Accueil Heritage from 2008 until March 2011.

Director - Christine Rodway

Christine Rodway has been sailing since she was a child with her father and grandfather out of Frenchman's Bay. Christine's early boating experience was exclusively focused on sailing, earning her CYA White Sail 1-3 by the time she was in her teens.  Christine is a member of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron; having achieved her Seamanship status. Christine is the Commander of York East District, managing five squadrons and teaching safe boating. Christine is also a member of the Aquatic Park Sailing Club, where her sailboat is moored for the summer months.

Director - Glenn Osmond B.Sc, CCP

Glenn is a human resources professional with extensive experience in providing advice and direction at a senior management level within the public sector while employed for many years within the public service and later as a contract consultant. Glenn is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador with a Bachelor of Science degree and is a certified compensation professional. Over the years, he has served in various volunteer capacities including as past President of the Toronto chapter of the International Personnel Management Association (IPMA), and in various roles with the Canadian Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA). He is also a licensed pilot and a member of the Buttonville Flying Club.

Director - Kathryn Langley Hope RN BScN MA (cand) CLT

Kathryn is president of K E Hope Consultants for 25 + years, focusing on both practice and patient care management, ergonomics, education and research, in the allopathic and complementary health fields privately, institutionally and in the community. Educated at The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing, Toronto, then U of T, graduating from U of Windsor, this led her to a challenging, very diverse, exceptional career in Canada and the US. As a Rotary Paul Harris 4 Sapphire Fellow, a Nightingale Honour Roll Nominee, Dame of the The Order of St George and The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient, these indicate, some of that depth which she brings to our board.

Director - Miles Smit MA, Ph.D

Miles has been involved with T-SAR since January, 2014. He is co-Director and co-Founder of the Petrarch Institute, which specializes in online education on Renaissance and Classical learning rubrics, such as Stoicism, Rhetoric and the Virtues. He has provided consulting and advisory to private and public sector clients on Risk, Strategy, Facilitation and Education. Since 2018 Miles has served as President of the Canadian ideas society, Civitas. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium, and is a supporter of fine and decorative arts in Canada, and the Toronto creative music scene. He lives near the lake shore near downtown Toronto, and is active in the Parish of Holy Family.

Director - Becky Coles

Becky Coles is a producer with NewsTalk1010 radio. She is the recipient of an RTDNA Award for her documentary, Suffering In Silence that highlighted the struggle of PTSD for First Responders, Corrections and the Military. Becky has spent much of her 18 plus years in the media working to raise awareness for mental health.

Director - William A King, J.D. (Retired)

William A. King has practiced law for over 35 years. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1971, articled at Edison, Aird & Berlis (now Aird & Berlis LLP) and returned there following the Bar Admission where he stayed until mid 1976. He then founded his own practice, primarily focused on corporate law, real estate, wills, powers of attorney and estates, and has remained a sole practitioner to the present.  William has served on the Board of The North Toronto Hockey Association and was a founding member and director of the Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.

Honorary Directors

L Col Matthew Gaasenbeek III HBA

Matthew Gaasenbeek is an Honorary Director of Toronto Search and Rescue and brings decades of experience to the table. He is currently the Honorary L. Colonel of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regiment, and his past leadership roles are vast, including: President of the RCMI, Chairman of the Ontario Development Corporation, Director of Midland Doherty.

Andrew Wnek BCom, MBA, CPA, CA

A senior financial executive with significant retail, oil and gas and not for profit industry experience, he held senior finance roles with Canadian Tire Corporation including Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration in a twenty one year career. Andrew also developed strong technology knowledge as the Chief Information Officer for over seven years for the Corporation. Most recently he was the National CFO for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Robert Kyba BSc and BCom, CMRP

Robert is a management consultant with 35 years' experience, specializing in applied analytics, and marketing challenges-launching new brands, corporate programs and new businesses, or enhancing the marketing outcomes for existing brands.  In a career spanning healthcare marketing, lifestyle assessment, behavioural analytics and the provision of strategic insight, his recent work is geared to the needs of the medical community including leading pharmaceutical and medical product manufacturers.

John Thompson BA, CD

John Thompson is one of Canada's more prolific commentators and researchers on issues of terrorism and other forms of organized violence and political instability. He served 13 years in the Canadian Army, five in the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies and ran the Mackenzie Institute for over 20 years. He is also an emerging author.

Mike Sundell BFA

Before he landed his first Art Directors position in New York City with Margeotes, Fertitta and Weiss in 1993, Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In the United States he worked for such firms as AKA Advertising in Portland, Oregon and Wong Doody in Seattle. He's built award winning campaigns for four out of the top five advertising agencies in Canada, namely Taxi, DDB, Zig and BBDO. He left Sharpe Blackmore Euro RSCG in 2010 where he was Associate Creative Director to launch his own firm, Character & Klatch Brand Development, Advertising and Design. His work has won him numerous awards from Communication Arts, Marketing, New York Art Directors, ADCC, New York Festivals, Applied Arts and the One Show.

John-Edward C. Hyde BA, MA, LLB, JD

John advises management on all aspects of employment and labour law, including representation before administrative tribunals, collective agreement negotiation, arbitrations, wrongful dismissal defense and human rights. He also assists clients in providing strategic legal and human resources advice on labour and employment matters arising out of complex mergers, acquisitions and the sale of businesses. John is one of only 24 lawyers in Ontario certified as a Specialist in Labour Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada.  John is a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute and is an avid sailor at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.

Angela Tai B.Sc

Angela Tai is an experienced Human Resources professional, specializing in Compensation analysis and consulting. Angela worked in corporate HR within the Financial Services Sector,  before moving on to Human Resources Consulting in downtown Toronto. Angela holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences from the University of the West Indies and a certificate in Human Resources Management from Ryerson University.

Goran Jovanovic B.Sc

Goran Jovanovic is the founder and President of Omega Network Solutions. Since 2005, his company has been successfully providing IT services to small and medium-sized businesses throughout the GTA. Goran brings more than thirty years of business and IT experience in a varied range of environments from large corporations such as Imperial Oil to small businesses. Goran is a graduate of the University of Manitoba in computer sciences. He was a founding member of the Marine Aquarium Society of Toronto. 

Past Directors

Gary Gibson

Gary Gibson joined the Metropolitan Toronto Police in 1976 and retired March 2012 with over 35 years of experience. During the 1980's Gary worked in many different roles in areas of critical importance, including the Major Crime Unit, Homicide, and The Public Order Unit (Riot Squad).  In August 1993 Gary was assigned to the Toronto Police Marine Unit and during his time there he developed an expertise in Marine Law. He also had several other roles of critical importance, including Boat Patrol Officer, Community Service Officer (He has been on several TV shows), and Coordinator of G20 Marine Logistics.

Jane McKenna

Jane McKenna is a long-time community leader in Burlington where she has lived for over 35 years. In that time, she has been involved with many projects for organizations including Rotary Central, The Carpenter Hospice and The Heart and Stroke Foundation. A self-educated entrepreneur, Jane has launched her own company, Rainmaker Consulting, a firm that builds on years of experience with in-house consulting services delivered to many of Burlington's small businesses. A tireless volunteer, Jane brought her trademark optimism and energy to Queen's Park as Burlington's provincial representative.

Freda Kemp BSc, MBA

From an early career in marketing and brand management, Freda Kemp made a commitment to work for social good. For the balance of her career, she has worked with government organizations and NGO's in the areas of social marketing, sponsorship and fundraising. She has both developed programs and secured the resources to fund those programs.

Ms. Kemp currently works with the City of Toronto Museums Unit. With an experienced team, she has led the drive to secure government, sponsorship and private funding for Museum programs and exhibits and for the recent Bicentennial Commemoration of the War of 1812. She has also worked closely with the Fort York Foundation to generate capital funding for the new Fort York Visitor Centre.

Barbara Byers

Barbara Byers is the Public Education Director and Research Director at the Lifesaving Society and is the Research Director of the National Drowning Prevention Research Centre Canada. 

Barbara is the Past Chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council and the current chair of the Educational Programs Committee. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the National Water Safety Congress (USA), the International Lifesaving Federation's Drowning Prevention Commission, a past member of the ILS Drowning Report committee and one of the principal authors of the 2007 World Drowning Report.

Crew

Over a dozen members make up the crew positions which include Coxswain, Helm, Navigator, Radio and Deckhand roles. We would like to thank our invisible heroes, Angela and the two Tim's who work behind the scenes to keep the operation humming.

Commanding Officer - Ivan Simokovic

Ivan is a Squadron Commander and a District Officer with Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons. He is a Transport Canada recognized examiner for PCOC and VHF as well as a certified instructor for the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Ivan has been a T-SAR volunteer since 2015.

Shipwright - Alan Banks

Alan is a long-standing member of our crew. He is a mentor and valued leader who brings years of sailing experience to our unit. As shipwright he has been instrumental in ensuring the readiness of our boat when we are going out on the water.
