New no boating zone off Hanlan's point

03/06/2025

Toronto boaters and beachgoers alike will notice new changes at Hanlan's Point Beach this summer aimed at making the waterfront safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

For the 2025 summer season, a Motorized Watercraft Exclusion Zone (MWEZ) has been implemented, extending 200 meters from the shoreline. This pilot project—developed in collaboration with PortsToronto and local authorities—prohibits motorized vessels, including personal watercraft and powerboats, from entering the designated swim zone.

The exclusion zone is designed to:

  • Improve safety for swimmers, paddleboarders, kayakers, and other non-motorized water users

  • Reduce conflict between fast-moving vessels and recreational beachgoers

  • Protect the natural shoreline environment of this popular beach area

To clearly define the restricted zone, PortsToronto will be installing buoys along the perimeter. The Toronto Police Marine Unit will also be patrolling the area to ensure compliance throughout the season.

In addition to the exclusion zone, a 400-meter Quiet Zone is in effect around Hanlan's Point, encouraging boaters to minimize engine noise and create a more peaceful environment for visitors.

Toronto Search and Rescue Marine (T-SAR) supports this initiative as a proactive step toward safer and more respectful shared water use on Lake Ontario. These measures help prevent accidents and support the growing number of people enjoying Toronto's waterfront through swimming and human-powered craft.

We encourage all boaters to plan ahead, stay informed, and respect the new zones to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone.
