T-SAR on Breakfast Television

Everything You Need to Know About Boating Safety This Summer: On May 15, 2025, Toronto Search and Rescue Marine (T-SAR) was featured live on Breakfast Television to help kick off the summer season with a vital message: boating safety saves lives.

Hosted by Natalie Preddie, the segment brought together T-SAR Unit Leader Ivan Simokovic and Deputy Unit Leader Ryan Lippert, who shared expert insights into safe boating practices, common hazards on Lake Ontario, and what every boater needs to know before heading out on the water this season.

With warm weather drawing more people to the water, the timing couldn't be more critical. Ivan and Ryan covered the importance of wearing lifejackets, checking weather conditions, carrying the right safety equipment, and staying sober while operating a vessel.

"Every summer, we respond to emergencies that could have been prevented with a little preparation and knowledge," said Simokovic. "We want people to enjoy the lake—but we also want them to get home safely."

T-SAR's appearance is part of a broader initiative to promote boating safety awareness throughout the Greater Toronto Area. As a volunteer-operated marine rescue unit under the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA), T-SAR patrols Lake Ontario and responds to distress calls, mechanical failures, and other emergencies—often in collaboration with local first responders.

From paddleboards to powerboats, the message was clear: no matter the vessel, safety comes first.

Be sure to:

  • Always wear a properly-fitted lifejacket

  • Check marine weather before heading out

  • File a float plan with someone you trust

  • Carry all required safety gear (whistle, bailer, flashlight, etc.)

  • Never mix alcohol or drugs with boating

  • Stay within your comfort zone and skill level
